UPSTAIRS BOOK CLUB

April
Our book for April will be 'When we  Speak of Nothing' by Olumide Poopola. "Best mates Karl and Abu are both 17 and live near King's Cross. It's 2011 and racial tensions are set to explode across London. Abu is infatuated with gorgeous classmate Nalini but dares not speak to her. Meanwhile, Karl is the target of the local "wannabe" thugs just for being different. When Karl finds out his father lives in Nigeria, he decides that Port Harcourt is the best place to escape the sound and fury of London, and connect with a Dad he's never known." We will be welcoming author Olumide Poopola to talk about her novel on 28th April in person Upstairs.

May
Our book for May will be 'Fates and Furies' by Lauren Groff. It takes place in New York and examines how different people in a relationship can have disparate views on the relationship. According to Groff, she originally envisioned the novel as two separate books, but she was encouraged by her agent to rewrite them as one integrated work. The novel is influenced by Greek Mythology; deities and vengeance are themes throughout.

If you want to support your local bookshop to purchase your copy, we can recommend Dulwich Books, Clapham Books and Forest Hill Books to name a few. For online sales why not try uk.bookshop.org where you get to allocate the sale to a bookshop of your choice.
