Biopic: Lion (Garth Davis, 2016)
While traveling in search of work a young 5 year old boy, Saroo, is separated from his family. Soon after this, he is adopted by an Australian couple. As he grows into adulthood he is plagued by memories and questions leading him on a search to find his home. This exploration takes him back to India 25 years later.
Romance: Moonstruck (Norman Jewison, 1987)
Loretta Castorini, is a frumpy and pessimistic widow living in Brooklyn, New York. She soon finds herself swept up in a love triangle when the man she finds herself falling for is her fiances estranged brother. Cher and Nicholas Cage star in this award winning romantic comedy.
Crime/Mystery: Fargo (Joel Cohen, Ethan Cohen, 1996)
Set against the snowy backdrop of Fargo, Minnesota, Fargo tells the story of Jerry Lundegaard, a car salesman who hires two bumbling hitmen to commit the perfect crime. As the incompetent criminals botch things up a very pregnant police chief Marge Gunderson sets out to investigate their crimes.
Comedy: The Big Sick (Michael Showalter, 2017)
This film is based on the true story of how comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gardner met. Pakistani-born Kumail is torn between his parent’s expectation for him to meet and settle down with a ‘nice’ Pakistani girl and the relationship he is starting to build with Emily. Only once Emily is hospitalised with a mysterious and critical illness, Kumail is forced to confront his feelings for her at the risk of losing his family.
