For when you just want to curl up on the sofa, relax and switch off, here are this month's top 5 film recommendations.
Adventure: Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000)
Commodus takes over power and demotes Maximus, one of the preferred generals of his father, Emperor Marcus Aurelius. As a result, Maximus is relegated to fighting till death as a gladiator. Scott's masterful storytelling makes the plot seem classic rather than cliched.
Biopic: Cleopatra (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1963)
The legendary Elizabeth Taylor portrays Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt, who becomes the mistress of Julius Ceaser of Rome in order to save her kingdom. However, when Ceaser is assassinated, she becomes Mark Antony's ally and lover.
Romance: Call Me By Your Name (Luca Guadagnino, 2017)
Call Me By Your Name is a sensual and transcendent tale of first love, based on the acclaimed novel by André Aciman. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever.
Crime/Mystery: Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958)
Considered by Hitchcock to be his most personal film, Vertigo is about an acrophobic ex-police officer who is hired to prevent an old friend's wife from committing suicide, but all is not as it seems. Hitchcock's haunting, compelling masterpiece is uniquely revelatory about the director's own predilections and hang-ups and is widely thought to be one of his masterworks.
Comedy: The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson, 2004)
Aptly nicknamed a 'dramedy', this film beautifully paints the picture of Gustave H, a concierge, who is wrongly framed for murder at the Grand Budapest Hotel. In the process of proving his innocence, he befriends a lobby boy. Wes Anderson delivers his famous deadpan comedy brilliantly.
